Recognizing the Next Generation of Family Planning Leaders Worldwide


The Bill & Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Health - 120 Under Forty: The New Generation of Family Planning Leaders


120 Under 40: The New Generation of Family Planning Leaders is a global program designed to highlight the accomplishments of inspiring young leaders who are making a difference in family planning and reproductive health worldwide. The program invites the public to nominate people who have made significant contributions to family planning at the local, national or international level, after which an expert review board including the public will choose 40 winners for 2016. Each will receive $1,000 from the Gates Institute to continue their work in family planning. The program will repeat annually, culminating in the selection of 120 leaders under 40 in 2020. To roll out the program, Gates Institute chose Blue Water.

The Solution:


To achieve this, Blue Water designed a vibrant, engaging and simple to use multi-lingual website for both nominators and nominees. The design was structured to focus first on the nominations, then on voting and finally on celebrating the winners. The site also includes a section that highlights the nominees and that can be searched by area of focus, name, age or status, along with their featured nominators, as well as a directory of nominees by organization and who they were nominated by, including their company name. For optimum results, Blue Water proposed development of the site in Drupal 7.

The Results:


Since its launch in April 2016, the website has had nearly 6,000 sessions with over 3,000 users and an average session duration of 5:49. 25% of website traffic was from the U.S. with the remainder emanating from around the world, including Nigeria, Kenya, Bangladesh, Uganda, India, Pakistan, Philippines, Nepal and the U.K.
