One Step Ahead: Keep Your Competition at Bay
In the 1930’s there was a man named William Knudsen, who worked his way from the assembly line floor to become President of General Motors (and was eventually commissioned by President Roosevelt for his services to the War Department). When asked about his tireless work ethic, he was famously quoted as saying:
“In business the competition will bite if you keep running. If you stand still, they will swallow you.”
While this isn’t an earth shattering revelation, the fundamental idea behind this statement can’t be underestimated. It becomes particularly important when applied to new media. In today’s business environment it’s simple: Your competition is online, and they are working to make their presence known. They are improving their sites. They are utilizing new technologies. They are driving online marketing campaigns.
Which brings us to the obvious question: How can you keep up?
The answer: Keep Running. Don’t let your site sit idly. You cannot simply be satisfied with your current Web site or marketing efforts. Whether it’s revitalizing design, enhancing navigation, implementing new technologies, or increasing search engine optimization efforts, a Web site can always be improved.
One of the most common questions I encounter when speaking with a new client is, “How long will this new site last before it’s outdated?” There are two possible answers, and both depend on the client’s perspective. If the client views the Web site as a project that is completed once launched – the answer is “unfortunately not long.” If the client can instead, view the Web site as an ongoing process – the answer is “as long as you need it.”
Web sites aren’t static objects. They are more like living things, and capable of being dynamic, interactive, and engaging. In order to get the most out of it (and keep a leg up on your competition), give your site the attention it deserves. Look for small ways to improve the site throughout the year, and ask for recommendations on new technology and strategies. It could make the difference between a nipping at your heels and being someone’s dinner.
