The Cook Political Report is an independent, non-partisan, newsletter analyzing elections and campaigns for the House, Senate, Governors and President, as well as political trends on either end of Pennsylvania Avenue. To coincide with its 33rd anniversary, The Cook Political Report engaged Blue Water for a site refresh and messaging development.
To support the two weekly columns by Charlie Cook, plus accommodate updates made weekly to the House, Senate, and Governor’s-at-a-Glance charts, not to mention the task of listing every candidate running in each state and district in the country, Blue Water proposed a new, easy-to-use content management system (CMS).
The site, developed on the Drupal platform, was especially chosen to help facilitate regular updates by staff including the popular “Cook Partisan Voting Index” (also known as “the PVI”), which lists each congressional district in the country according to propensity for voting Democratic or Republican.
In addition, several interactive maps and charts were installed, with the purpose of integrating with an ever-shifting sea of state- and region-specific data, and designed to facilitate a more tactile user experience.
The resulting website, using colors to reflect the non-partisan nature of the organization, while at the same time offering a simple, easy-to-access UX, was well-received by Charlie Cook and the staff at The Cook Political report, as well as the long list of users from both ends of the political spectrum.
