Sustaining Health Outcomes through the Private Sector (SHOPS) Plus is USAID’s flagship initiative in private sector health. The project seeks to harness the full potential of the private sector and catalyze public-private engagement to improve health outcomes in family planning, HIV, child health, and other health areas. SHOPS Plus charged Blue Water for a website design and development, and messaging campaign.
One overriding challenge was to create a site that would equally serve SHOPS Plus’s two main audiences: the private sector found mostly in the US, and underserved communities in remote parts of the globe, with differing levels of language proficiency, and often compromised internet connectivity.
Blue Water focused on a mobile first solution to ensure that audiences in communities with compromised levels of connectivity were served as robustly as their counterparts in high connectivity areas. In addition, an easy to navigate, simple and personable site, with a neutral but clear copy style was introduced to cater for audiences where English might not be a first language.
In addition, the new site design and IA makes provision for not only the easy content management of news and highlights to support the various health and technical areas, but also for the sharing of news, highlights and upcoming events to reinforce the mission of SHOPS Plus in the global community.
The newly-designed and developed website went live in early 2017 and has been unanimously embraced by audiences on both ends of the private-public healthcare divide. In addition, page views and time spent on the site have increased exponentially, resulting in positive outcomes for underserved communities across the globe.
